Hugh became a member of ‘Let it Blaw’ in 1980 and was first mentioned in the Toast List/Programme in 1991
For many years Hugh represented the ‘Balerno Ward’ on Edinburgh District Council as it was then known. A hugely popular figure in the village, people from all political persuasions would vote for Hugh as he represented everyone to the best of his ability, and not just those of his own Conservative party.
At ‘Let it Blaw,’ Hugh was known for his hilarious renditions of “John Barleycorn” which, whether it was on the programme or not, whether it was introduced by the croupiers or not, usually found its way into the harmony of the evenings by public demand.
In 1997 ‘Let it Blaw’ enjoyed a unique event when the Toast, “The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns,’ was proposed by Hugh together with long-time friend and former colleague Jimmy Johnstone MBE.
