Unity McGinty

For reasons lost with the passage of time, Unity McGinty earned a mention in Let it Blaw’s minute book as the young housekeeper/servant of Club stalwart George Y. Robertson during his period as Estate Overseer at Bavelaw Castle, Balerno.

Out of curiosity, a check was made of records on the “Scotland’s People website to find out where young Unity came from, was she a Balerno local etc.

She was born on 29th January 1876 in Cadder, a village just outside Bishopbriggs, daughter of John McGinty and his wife Jane Tripenny.

In 1897, Unity had a child to a Patrick McRoberts.

By the 1901 census, George Robertson and his maid Unity (24 years of age) were recorded as being resident at Bavelaw Castle.  Sometime that year, Unity married an Alex MacPherson who was a picture framer in Edinburgh. They stayed at 10 Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh and Alex’ business premises were at 10 Forrest Road, Edinburgh.

There was then no trace of Unity apart from her death being recorded in Canada in 1915.
