It’s known that annual Suppers took place throughout the period 1961 to 1969 but, unfortunately,
most of the records and some of the Toast Lists for this period have been lost.
Records of some of the Club’s Office Bearers during this period do exist and can be found elsewhere on this Website.
Anecdotal evidence tells that the Suppers were very much on the lines of the first Toast List below for 1961.
–
There’s no doubt that Harry & Robin Rankin were to the fore throughout the period. Robin “Addressed the Haggis”
and recited “Tam o Shanter” every year, and Harry sang the bothy ballad sung at the very first Supper in 1881 annually,
a duty he took over from John Fairbairn c.1939. Over the years it became known as “The Balerno Song.”
Harry gave annual renditions of what he always referred to as “There was a Lad,” known elsewhere as “Rantin, Rovin Robin.”
–
Active in the Club during this period were other long-time members Jock Taylor and Bertie Tennant
both of whom were Club Presidents, Willie Calder, Willie Shanks and Bobby Peat who was Club Piper.
–
If anyone reading this section is able to add to the detail of any Supper, they are invited to contact the Club’s Office Bearers
who will arrange to have their contributions added to Club Records.
